Microsoft Doubts Mozilla’s Billionth Download

by

Never to be outdone, Microsoft has spared some time from its busy schedule of extending support for Internet Explorer 6 so that it could rail at Mozilla’s alternative browser, Firefox. More accurately, it’s calling into question the claim that Firefox has been downloaded a billion times.

Well, Microsoft is certainly on a roll today. It’s one thing to extend the life of a browser that it very much seems as though the internet at large hates… it’s another to do so and then question one of your competitors’ big marketing claims. If nothing else, it’s a busy day for Microsoft. Once again, at centre stage is Microsoft’s general manager for Internet Explorer, Amy Barzdukas.

The Guardian is reporting that Barzdukas said of Mozilla’s claim of 1 billion downloads, “It’s an interesting number and I have not seen the math [but] how many internet connected users are there? 1.1 billion, 1.5 billion, something in that area.” Naturally, we’d imagine that the 1 billion downloads figure was arrived at by including the repeat downloads by people looking for updates, but that’s relatively trivial.

One of the most interesting things to take away from this is the combination of this with the news that Microsoft is extending support for IE6. As we intoned in our article about the IE6 extension, it may very well be the case that Microsoft doesn’t want to encourage people to move on form IE6 because it may have the knock on effect of pushing people to consider their browser options. Seen in that light, it’s noteworthy that the Mozilla marketing bashing happens on the same day.

Or it could just all be a gauche comment made by one browser’s people of another browser’s marketing…

You can read an awful lot more of Barzdukas’ thoughts on the matter over at The Guardian, here.

More fud. So bitter. The same people whose self-commissioned report claims IE8 to be the most secure browser? And I read Mozilla’s figure of 1 billion does __not__ include updates. They are losing browser market share. They should get over it.

Yeah, the whole IE8 thing seems to be a bit of a house of cards, considering the fact that MS is having this much trouble getting people to leave IE6. It’s a strange situation.
