RIM Profits Down

by

Research in Motion, best known as the crowd behind the part-product part-cultural-phenomenon, the Blackberry, has said that it’s not happy with its current financial situation.

Cnet is carrying word that the hit RIM has taken is due in large part to a combination a heft legal settlement and disappointing sales of its Blackberry smartphones. The real question now is whether or not this is the result of the general economic downturn (about which we heard so very much) or an indication that the market has shifted away from the Blackberry as a device.

Naturally, with the market now starting to see something of a smartphone saturation (between handsets like the by now near ubiquitous iPhone and Palm’s Pre) it seems as though the function-over-form model taken by so many of the Blackberry line. It could very well be that business users have started making the migration to some of the sleeker devices available, regardless of the fact that they often don’t have the same amount of UI polish as RIM devices tend to.

Naturally, RIM is downplaying the drop, with CEO Jim Balsillie saying that, “I appreciate looking for trends, but I don’t think you should extrapolate too much over a little bump here or there.”

With any luck, Balsillie will be proven right, and this will be nothing more than an unfortunate fluctuation in RIM’s fortunes. The Blackberry has done an awful lot to revolutionise the way people communicate and to popularise the idea of mobile email and mobile web in general.
