Acer Touts First 3D Notebook

The push towards 3D has finally jumped platorm enough to hit notebooks and Acer is pushing the 5738DG as its first 3D capable laptop.

As well you might expect, this isn’t the same kind of tacky blue/red 3D you’ll need to take adantage of some of Nvidia’s 3D gaming options (including Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead), but works by polarising the lenses on your glasses so that you see in 3D. Of course, there’s relatively little detail on just what we can expect from it in terms of specifications, but we do know a little bit about how it manages its 3D display setup.

According to the guys over at Pocket-Lint, the 3D process here is based on a specialised 3D coating applied to the screen. Moreover, the notebook comes with the TriDef suite, including a media player specifically designed to play movies in 3D and should manage to translate games from 2D to 3D.

For now, we’re a bit sceptical on 2D to 3D translation, if only because… well, it seems like it could well be too wonderful a thing to really work reliably. I’m not sure if that’s too cynical, but we’re going to have to wait and see.

For now, there’s no word on when it’ll see release in Europe or at what price, but we’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for it, if only to see just how well the 2D-3D converstion works out.
