Olympic Medals Made from Recycled Electronics

It’s been announced that the medals for the 2010 Olympic games are to be made from recycled electronic components. Surprisingly enough, they look excellent.

Word comes via Technabob that the medals themselves are not only made from recycled circuit boards, which adds a certain amount of nerd-cred, but they also feature work from artists Corrine Hunt and Omer Arbel. Each medal is also completely unique, meaning that even gold medalists will get to be envious of one another.

It’s also worth pointing out that, aside from the fact that the medals are very pleasant, there’s also an excellent making-of video up with details and commentary from the artists who made the medals themselves. It’s an excellent story, including some interesting details on the artwork for individual artwork on some of the medals.

If nothing else, it’ll be an excellent piece of publicity for the both the artists and art using entirely recycled materials. It might seem a relatively simple project, but as the artists themselves have said, the hope was to “challenge people’s expectations.”

It’ll be interesting to see how much publicity the fact that the medals are made from recycled materials will be during the games themselves, when, as the saying goes, the world is watching.
