Meteor to Launch HTC Hero November 1st

by

Meteor has announced an update to its fairly vague “November” launch date for the much-anticipated Hero, which we’re not told will actually happen on November 1st.

The hype about the Hero’s release in Ireland is due to a combination of it being launched on Meteor (whose smartphone range has been a little lacklustre to say the least, since O2 snagged both the iPhone and the Palm Pre). With Vodafone to release the iPhone to its customers in early 2010, the Hero could well be the handset that keeps Meteor in the game. Perhaps most interesting though, is word that Meteor intends to introduce new price plans for users who pick up the Hero.

The current rumour is that we’ll see the Hero introduced alongside a low-cost, unlimited data plan, which would certainly go some way towards countering O2’s default plans for the iPhone and the Palm Pre, which are capped at a fairly inexplicable 1GB a month.

The original news of the HTC Hero’s launch in Ireland came from Meteor’s own forum, where one of its administrators announced that, “I have just been speaking to our product guys and I can confirm that we will definitely be launching an Android handset on our network in November!!!”

We’re told to expect the Android based smartphone to set bill-pay customers back by around the €99 mark, while pay-as-you-go users will be looking at €399. For more details you can check out the full release from Meteor about it. It looks like it may only be available in White from Meteor for now too.

Word on the street has it that it can handle Google Wave out of the box… slowly, but it can do it. I know that shouldn’t excite us, but it does more than a little.

Cool, we get an Android device eventually. As usual, Ireland is the last to the party.

Ironic that Vodafone is part of the Open Handset Alliance (the Android people), yet seem to be shunning the devices in Ireland.
