Geocities Died Last Night

Yahoo’s predetermined date to pull the plug on an ailing GeoCities has finally rolled around, and the free hosting provider we came to know and love in the nineties is finally over and done.

Free hosting from GeoCities may seem like a bit of a relic of a bygone day, but for many web users it was the fact that GeoCities was so accommodating that allowed them to make their own little corner of the web. Now that GeoCities is on its way out, a fairly sizeable chunk of the web’s history is going out with it. Yahoo has posted a basic enough page to the page that simply reads “GeoCities is closing on October 26th, 2009. New GeoCities accounts are no longer available.”

Of course, there’s not too much left on GeoCities that hasn’t since been thrown up elsewhere, but it’ll be interesting to see if there are any real reverberations of this across the web at large. TomsHardware is carrying word from Yahoo that users are advised that they will be unable to access their old accounts, and that they should consider moving over to Yahoo’s own for-pay hosting.

It might not be a massive deal anymore, with free hosting as easy to come by as it is now, but the closing of GeoCities is certainly an abrupt end to a big piece of web history. It’s a death almost entirely without fanfare too, which is somehow just a touch sadder.

If you’d like to check out the Yahoo page for GeoCities, you can do so here, but it doesn’t really offer a tremendous amount of detail.
