Xbox Owners Buying PS3s

by

With the recent shakeup in the games console market, it seems that long-time faithful Xbox 360 owners are moving over into Sony’s side of the market, picking up the new PlayStation 3 Slim.

Ever since the price drop, the PS3 has been selling like hot cakes.

In what’s starting to look more and more as though it could have been the turning point in the current generation console war, Sony’s decision to price-drop it’s PlayStation 3 to €299 with the release of the PS3 Slim has precipitated massive sales of the console, many of which to Xbox 360 owners, with relatively few PS3 fans going in the opposite direction with the Xbox price drop.

Those buying consoles now are likely doing so to avoid getting caught up in the potential hardware shortages that tend to hit around Christmas, when the world and its mother decides that a console would be a fine thing to own. It’s also been pointed out by Gamasutra that those buying games console now are doing so just in time to catch the wave of new releases that tends to hit just before Christmas.

Of course, it always helps to shift a few consoles when you’ve got big name games coming out. Perhaps most interesting is the fact that Assassin’s Creed 2 and Modern Warfare 2 are charting so high on people’s “to buy” lists, though both are entirely understandable.

It’ll be interesting to see how well Modern Warfare 2 performs on consoles after the utter debacle that’s been its handling on the PC (no dedicated servers, no customisation and no developers’ console). It seems likely that many PC gamers will pick up the console version as a way to play the game and still vote with their feet, so to speak.

If you’re interested in more detail, you’d do well to check out the Gamasutra piece on the latest console sales figures.
