Asus Moves to EEE Desktop

by

Asus is moving its EEE brand up in the world with news that its to offer an EEE desktop, specifically designed to offer a solid media PC on a low budget, and it’s surprisingly impressive.

TheRegister is carrying word of the new EEE machine, dubbed the EEE Box 1501, which boasts an optical drive, as you might reasonably expect from a media-centric machine, a dedicated graphics chipset, and comes with Windows 7 installed. Still, there are those features that seem to indicate it might owe just a little too much to its netbook roots to let it be of too much interest to those looking for a little more performance.

While it’ll be happy to take up to 4GB of RAM, you’re stuck with an Intel Atom 330 processor. Admittedly, you’ll be happy to hear that the Atom 330, for those who don’t already know, is a dual core, but it’s still an Atom at heart, so we’ll be curious to see how well it performs.

Perhaps the single most interesting facet of the whole thing is the fact that it boasts Nvidia’s ION chipset, something that Shelton has been telling me we’d see make an appearance in nettops in an attempt to push high-definition capable graphics into a smaller and smaller box. Certainly we’re curious to see just how well it performs, but it sounds like a very interesting beast indeed.

Thanks to the ION chipset in there, the EEE Box 1501 boasts its own HDMI out, so there’s nothing stopping you from connecting it to your TV directly and watching most of your media on it… except the fact that it’s hard drive sits at the 250GB mark. Still, that’s why God gave us external drives, I imagine.

Is there an idea when Komplett will be stocking these?

Not sure, there’s fairly limited demand for nettops in Ireland at the moment. Hopefully the availability of more ION powered netbooks will help to drive it up a bit.

I’ll ask on Monday what the plan is with regard the EEE Box for us 🙂
