Twitter Shows Off 2009 Trends

by

Twitter has posted its top trending topics for 2009 and some of them are fairly revealing when it comes to just what the most talked about topics on Twitter have been over the last year or so.

While some of the topics are obvious, the fact is that some of the most talked-about topics on Twitter in the last year are things that seemed to be of pressing importance at the time, but have already faded from the collective consciousness almost entirely. Perhaps the most notable among these is the “#iranelection” which grabbed the number one spot for news events most tweeted about, while “Iran” and “Tehran” sat at numbers four and five respectively.

Of course, not everything is quite as big as the Iranian election trend, with “#uksnow” managing to grab the number eight spot.

When it comes to the people who have been most talked about this year, it seems unlikely that anyone will be surprised to see that Michael Jackson has managed to grab the number one spot, just as he did in Google’s trending topics for 2009. It’s also nice to see Susan Boyle grab number two, if for no other reason than the whole Cinderella story.

Anyway, all that aside, the Twitter trending topics for 2009 are all posted over at the official Twitter Blog where you can take a look through everything involved. The trending topics are broken down into categories that make them a little more meaningful, including: news events, people, movies, TV shows, sports, technology and, the obligatory, hash tags.

It’s interesting to see that Snow Leopard managed to score higher under technology than Windows 7. It’s enough to make us wonder if there’s a disproportionately high number of Mac users on Twitter…

I wouldn’t say there’s more Mac users on twitter, I would say Mac users are far more aware of their systems, software and versioning then Windows users. I would bet a huge amount of Win XP users don’t really know what Windows Vista or 7 is…

Or even more likely Mac users will be constantly talking about their Mac and probably use hash tags every time.
Gives them a place to shout about how amazing it is and we don’t have to listen to them, win win really!

It’s weird though, the hash tags for Snow Leopard don’t make it into the top trending topics, but “snow leopard” itself does. It could literally just be the case that so many people were saying things about it while it was on the way out. There was also a lot of talk about it when it emerged that using the Guest Account caused the OS to erase whole profiles 😉
