Good afternoon all, hopefully Christmas was as kind to you as possible, but if it wasn’t there’s always some consolation to be had from the fact that it’s all over now. Anyway, before we get to the “happy new year” potion of the post (that’ll be at the end) we always do a post at the start of the week to detail some of our special offers.
This week, we have a solid notebook, a Wireless N router and a 1TB media player on sale. We’ll roll with the notebook first.
Acer Aspire 7730G-664G100MN:
Acer’s Aspire 7730G-664G100MN may have a model name that reads like a license plate, but aside from making its name a little hard to keep in your head that shouldn’t discourage you.
We’ll get down to brass tacks as quickly as possible. The Aspire boasts a 17” display with a resolution of 1440 x 900, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor clocked at 2.2GHz and 4GB of memory. Moreover, it boasts 1TB of internal storage, though not on one drive. Instead, it’s spread across two 500GB drives, which means you’re at lower risk of both failing. It might seem like a small thing, but it can be a godsend if you end up in a position to need it. It’s also got a GeForce 9600M-GT.
The machine does come with Windows Vista Home Premium, which means you’d be best off purchasing an upgrade copy of Windows 7 to set up on the machine when you get it, if Windows Vista is a deal-breaker.
The Acer Aspire weighs in at €695, which isn’t a bad old deal at all.
Linksys Wireless Dual-N Band:
Last week’s offer of a Wireless-N router was well received, and people asked what else we offer when it comes to high-speed local networking.
The whole point with Wireless N is that it gives you a wider range and higher speeds. This Linksys Wireless N router boasts speeds of up to 300Mbps, which should be a significant bump for anyone who’s been using Wireless B/G until now. Aside from the fact that it looks that bit nicer than other routers, will probably bump your transfer speed (provided you’re working from a machine with a Wireless N capable card) there’s also the wider range too look forward to.
The Linksys Wireless Dual-N band router will set you back €130.01 for this week, which isn’t bad at all.
Conceptronic Media Giant PRO PVR:
When it comes to media players, Western Digital’s HD Media Player tends to rule the roost, but Conceptronic’s Media Giant Pro 1TB manages to put up some very compelling competition.
Where many standalone media players, like the WD TV will require you to plug in your own external storage, most often Western Digital’s Elements 1TB, the Conceptronic Media Giant boasts 1TB of its own hard drive space, onto which you can drag a bundle of your own media onto it. Moreover, it boasts its own 100Mbps LAN connection, so you can just play things across your home network. It’s an easier solution than dragging content around external drives at all times.
It’s a bit of a chunky box, given that it’s 25 cm x 23 cm x 8.5 cm, which means it should sit comfortably alongside the other various boxes under the telly, but it’s not quite as inconspicuous as the WD TV and its ilk. It also boasts HDMI out and will output in Full HD. All of which means it’s ideally suited to sitting downstairs under a nice big TV, but housing all of your media,
Conceptronic’s Media Giant Pro 1TB is €214.99, which isn’t a bad deal at all.
