Word has arrived from this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that Microsoft has managed to get downloadable content for Modern Warfare 2 before other platforms.
According to the report from gaming blog Destructoid, the by now inevitable downloadable content for the record breaking latest entry to the Call of Duty series, Modern Warfare 2, will appear on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 before being made available on either of the other two platforms on which people are playing the game, the PC and Sony’s PlayStation 3.
While exclusive downloadable content hasn’t been the massive decider that many had predicted it would be, it has become a significant talking point for Microsoft that it’s managed to secure the rights to exclusive content for big name games, both of which record breakers.
The last game that Microsoft managed to grab exclusive downloadable content for was Grand Theft Auto 4, with the downloadable content hitting the Xbox 360 and proving a major selling point for those picking up the console strictly for the Grand Theft Auto release (a number likely higher than most would imagine, given the spike in Xbox 360 sales around GTA4’s release).
It’s interesting to see that Microsoft has secured downloadable content on the two biggest-selling games of this console generation, without any very outspoken competition from Sony, who you’d imagine would be doing everything in its power to grab a little of the online-based spotlight. It’s hard to see anyone being able to play down solid exclusive content and the offer of free online via PSN, but for now it seems that Microsoft is to be the home of downloadable content before anyone else for now.
