Samsung Transparent Notebook Nears Release

February 8, 2010

It seems that Samsung is nearing the release of its transparent active matrix OLED (AMOLED) displays, with the company likely to release devices boasting the displays over the next 12 months.

Transparent displays are both impressive and a little confusing...

For those who haven’t encountered the AMOLED arrangement, the image above should give some impression. Essentially, the display itself is transparent, meaning your desktop (or whatever else you happen to be watching) is not quite fully transparent, but still pretty hip nonetheless. Still, the technology will likely be more interesting in devices other than notebooks, so it’s curious to see that Samsung does have other devices in the works.

Apple Patents Solar-Powered iPod

January 26, 2010

Strange as it might seem amid the flurry of tablet-based rumours, there has been some other news leaking out of Apple in bits and pieces, not least the fact that it seems we can expect to see solar powered, gesture controlled iPods someday.

While the upcoming tablet is certainly all the rage (or at least, so it seems if you’re to judge by just about any major media organisation’s output) the fact is that we still don’t know an awful lot about it. Indeed, while it might not seem likely at all, it could well be another Apple TV; that is to say, it might all look great until we actually see the device, at which point everyone essentially said, “Yeah, and?”

Special Offers – Week of January 11th

January 11, 2010

Good afternoon all, hopefully we find you well this rainy, suspiciously snowless Monday afternoon. It’s nice to see that the “much worse” that was “still to come” on Friday hasn’t quite materialised, leaving us with a pleasant (if somewhat rainy) week ahead of us.

As anyone who reads the blog regularly will know, we like to post the special offers for the coming week on a Monday afternoon; it gives everyone the longest possible time to consider a purchase while the price is knocked down, which is always nice 🙂

Anyway, without any more delay, this week our special offers are on RAM, an upgrade kit and a media player.

4GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600MHz

Corsair’s Dominator is a solid RAM kit, with a full 4GB (that’s on two 2GB sticks) that shouldn’t break the bank. Still, it’s not on the low end of the performance scale.

Click through to see our page for the Corsair Dominator 4GB kit 🙂

Considering the performance, it’s nice to see Corsair’s Dominator on special offer, with the price dropped by 7%. Of course, it’s not for everyone, with high-end memory there will always be those whose machines don’t support it. In this case, you’re going to want to make sure that your motherboard supports DDR3, but aside from that you should be good to go.

It’s also worth mentioning that whenever we do a PC build, one of the guys in RMA (whether Ryan or Shetlon) will always advise that we roll with Corsair RAM, since they’re a reliable company with a solid reputation when it comes to memory. It might seem like a relatively small thing when you’re considering performance and a multitude of other things in your build… but it can save headaches later.

For this week, Corsair’s Dominator DDR3 1600MHz 4G kit will set you back €128.47.

Philips Teams up with Songbird

January 5, 2010

Open source media player Songbird has received a massive boost today with the announcement that it will be bundled with Philips’ MP3 players, pushing the software to vast numbers of new users.

For those who haven’t encountered Songbird, it’s an entirely open source media player, with a look-and-feel that’s not entirely dissimilar from Apple’s iTunes setup. Indeed, Songbird has made something of a name for itself as a customisable alternative to iTunes, which many find to be too much of a headache to use under Windows. The deal with Philips will see Songbird distributed with the companies new line of GoGear MP3 players.

Special Offers – Week of December 29th

December 29, 2009

Good afternoon all, hopefully Christmas was as kind to you as possible, but if it wasn’t there’s always some consolation to be had from the fact that it’s all over now. Anyway, before we get to the “happy new year” potion of the post (that’ll be at the end) we always do a post at the start of the week to detail some of our special offers.

This week, we have a solid notebook, a Wireless N router and a 1TB media player on sale. We’ll roll with the notebook first.

Acer Aspire 7730G-664G100MN:

Acer’s Aspire 7730G-664G100MN may have a model name that reads like a license plate, but aside from making its name a little hard to keep in your head that shouldn’t discourage you.

Click through to see our page for Acer's Aspire notebook 🙂

We’ll get down to brass tacks as quickly as possible. The Aspire boasts a 17” display with a resolution of 1440 x 900, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor clocked at 2.2GHz and 4GB of memory. Moreover, it boasts 1TB of internal storage, though not on one drive. Instead, it’s spread across two 500GB drives, which means you’re at lower risk of both failing. It might seem like a small thing, but it can be a godsend if you end up in a position to need it. It’s also got a GeForce 9600M-GT.

The machine does come with Windows Vista Home Premium, which means you’d be best off purchasing an upgrade copy of Windows 7 to set up on the machine when you get it, if Windows Vista is a deal-breaker.

The Acer Aspire weighs in at €695, which isn’t a bad old deal at all.

Last Minute Christmas Gifts

December 21, 2009

Good morning all. Those of you who keep up with us on Twitter will already know that 1300 today is the closing date for people who want orders to be delivered to them in time for Christmas via An Post. With that in mind, there’s a little under three hours to get last minute orders in.

There are a few things that will always go down well, won’t break the bank and just about everyone will find a use for over the coming year that we think will make fine last-minute Christmas presents for those who haven’t managed to get all of their shopping done yet (and let’s not kid ourselves, we’re firmly in that category ourselves).

Western Digital Elements 1TB:

Western Digital’s Elements 1TB external hard drive is a simple enough thing to pick up for Christmas, but it’s also one of those “gifts that keeps on giving.” Moreover, it’s only €79, which means you can grab one for your nearest and dearest without bankrupting yourself.

Click through to see our page for the WD Elements 1TB hard drive 🙂

There’s nothing like giving someone the gift of not having to worry about deleting things; it’s relatively simple, but hard drive purchases are something that tend to get put on the long finger until, eventually, you realise you’ve got a fast-filling hard drive in your main machine and nowhere to put whatever is taking up your space.

Better still, there’s nothing like being there when someone is restoring a machine from a backup and having the self-satisfied little grin that says, “He only has that backup because picked up the drive.”

It’s the little things that help make it through Christmas, but the promise of being able to be smug later on is a bonus. You can check out the Western Digital Elements 1TB in more detail on our product page for it if you’re interested.

All We Want for Christmas

December 17, 2009

Over the next few days, we’ll be posting a single blog post from each member of the Komplett.ie staff that details a single item they’ll be giving this Christmas, and one that they’ll be hoping to receive. It’s a simple enough plan, and today we’re starting out with Shelton from RMA, we’ll continue on to Ryan tomorrow

It’s something that works a little better than a recommendation, if only because we’ll be genuinely trying to pick out gifts for other people that won’t break the bank… and genuinely hopeful about what we might be bought 😉

From Shelton:

Shelton didn’t tell us just who he was buying for, but when we asked him what he’d be buying for someone this Christmas he managed to get a link to me nice and fast, so it seems as though he’s put some thought into it at least.

Click through to see our page for the WD TV Live Media Player 🙂

Shelton’s pick as a gift is something that we’ve seen a bit of a rush on over the last couple of months, Western Digital’s TV Live Media Player, usually shortened simply to WD TV Live Media Player.

For those not familiar with Western Digital’s TV line, they essentially allow you to play media directly from an external hard drive to your TV, without any bother. For those who have already use the lighter Media Player that WD makes, the networking options really do give this one a bit of a bump.

As the customer review on the product itself says, “All drives connected to the player are easily accessed from any PC/Laptop in my home network.” It’s always nice to be able to say that the customer review on a product is a five-star review.

Western Digital’s WD TV Live Media Player is €125, which isn’t bad at all considering what it does.

Analysts Predict 2010 to be Year of Apps

December 7, 2009

Industry analysts have predicted that we’ll likely see a tripling of the total number of apps made available in the iPhone and iPod Touch App Store, despite Apple’s often-arbitrary approval process for portable apps.

The analysts at IDC have released a list of predictions for the calendar year 2010 that range from the entirely predictable to the acutely interesting. The news that the folks at IDC are predicting we’ll see an Apple Tablet in one form or another is a little less interesting than the predicted explosion in the app department. Of course, the whole business is entirely dependent on Apple being one thing that it simply hasn’t been when its come to the App Store until now…

Special Offers – Week of November 9th

November 9, 2009

Good afternoon all, hopefully everyone has had a good weekend and Monday is treating you guys well, though we’re aware there are some pretty nasty bugs going around so if anyone’s sick then get well soon. For those of you who aren’t familiar, we like to do a Special Offers post every Monday with the offers for the week.

This means you guys have longer to decide whether or not you’re up for a purchase, it’s a solid plan. This week’s special offers are pretty much all Apple products, from iPods to MacBooks.

We aim to be cheaper than the Irish Apple Store on pretty much all of the Apple products that we stock.

iPod Touch 64GB:

When Apple announced an event in September, many had expected to hear that the iPod Touch would be graced with an iPhone-style camera. While that turned out not to be the case, Apple instead showed off the third generation of the iPod Touch, which boasts a few fairly nifty features of its own.

iPod Touch 64GB

Click through to see our page for the 64GB iPod Touch 🙂

Perhaps most impressive of those new features is the fact that the newest version of the Touch boasts increased capacity over its predecessors, scaling up from the previous max of 32GB to a new high of 64GB, which finally gives serious music fans the option to have a proper library on a flash-based device.

The other big bonus about the newest incarnation of the iPod Touch is that it boasts the same processor as the iPhone 3G S, meaning that it’s significantly more capable than on older models. This is good news to fans of Apple’s App Store and the vast number of games and media available from it. For many the iPod Touch is a nice way to get in on the App Store without needing to sink money into the contract you’d need to get the same from an iPhone. It makes a lot of sense in that respect.

The 64GB iPod Touch is €349.

If that feels like a little much, the 32GB Touch is €269, while the 8GB Touch is just €179.
