Top 5 Games of 2009 – Wii Dominates

February 4, 2010

Usually we only really see charts and figures from the US when it comes to the games industry, but now there’s been a list compiled of the best selling games of last year, and it looks like Nintendo is going strong.

Apparently, it still prints money

The report was compiled by industry analysts MCV, which goes through a fairly in-depth breakdown of just how well the games industry has been performing over the course of 2009 before launching into the list proper. It’s interesting to see that, despite the fact that some games sold fantastically well (Modern Warfare 2 being the most obvious example), there was still something of a decline worldwide, which is to be expected given the current economic climate. Surprisingly though, a large proportion of that decline seems to have come from the aging PlayStation 2 market…

Nintendo Wii to get Netflix Support

January 13, 2010

Nintendo is to bring support for Netflix video streaming service to its Wii games console, adding the functionality to the Wii’s web-based lineup.

The move sees Nintendo’s Wii join its various competitors in offering some form of Netflix integration to the console. Indeed, both Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 already offer some form of Netflix integration, so it’s one area in which Nintendo is very much playing catch-up, but it’s still an interesting development from an industry point of view, especially, coming as it does, from the market leader.

Modern Warfare DLC to Hit Xbox First

January 8, 2010

Word has arrived from this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that Microsoft has managed to get downloadable content for Modern Warfare 2 before other platforms.

According to the report from gaming blog Destructoid, the by now inevitable downloadable content for the record breaking latest entry to the Call of Duty series, Modern Warfare 2, will appear on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 before being made available on either of the other two platforms on which people are playing the game, the PC and Sony’s PlayStation 3.

Microsoft Responds to Xbox Suit

November 24, 2009

Microsoft has responded to the just-launched class action suit against it for its decision to ban somewhere between 600,000 and a million Xbox Live users for having modified their Xbox 360 consoles to play pirated games, essentially pooh-poohing the whole business.

For those who missed our piece on it yesterday, the class action suit doesn’t necessarily disagree with the banning of users from Microsoft’s Xbox Live service, but takes issue with the manner and timing with which Microsoft executed the bans. The suit, being taken against Microsoft by Abington IP, points out the fact that the ban falls immediately after the launch of Halo: ODST and just before the launch of the now record-breaking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Modern Warfare 2 Bests Film Industry Records

November 20, 2009

The latest addition to the Call of Duty series, the much vaunted Modern Warfare 2, has gone above and beyond, breaking not just gaming records set by Grand Theft Auto 4, but outperforming record breaking movies.

Word comes from the AFP that Modern Warfare 2 hasn’t just broken records when it comes to videogame sales, topping Grand Theft Auto’s first week sales (which hit the princely sum of $500 million) by something to the tune of 10% higher, but that it’s also outperforming movie records. The comparison offered is between the latest Harry Potter film and Modern warfare; Harry Potter took in $394 million in its open week, which pales in comparison to Modern Warfare 2’s $550 million.

Modern Warfare 2 Poised for Record

November 10, 2009

With the world and its mother either excited or enraged by Infinity Ward’s latest entry to the Call of Duty series, Modern Warfare 2, it seems the game is likely to break records regardless of the controversy surrounding it.

According to the BBC, the folks at HMV are convinced that its going to break the record number of copies sold in its first week of release. A spokesperson for the company said as much in no uncertain terms, telling the BBC that, “We estimate the game will exceed 1m UK sales in its first week, which would be a new record.” Certainly, it’d be an achievement for the folks at Infinity Ward to break that record, but to do so in spite of the negative press surrounding the game is only more impressive.

Xbox Owners Buying PS3s

November 6, 2009

With the recent shakeup in the games console market, it seems that long-time faithful Xbox 360 owners are moving over into Sony’s side of the market, picking up the new PlayStation 3 Slim.

Ever since the price drop, the PS3 has been selling like hot cakes.

In what’s starting to look more and more as though it could have been the turning point in the current generation console war, Sony’s decision to price-drop it’s PlayStation 3 to €299 with the release of the PS3 Slim has precipitated massive sales of the console, many of which to Xbox 360 owners, with relatively few PS3 fans going in the opposite direction with the Xbox price drop.
